On-Campus Programs - applications due January 15th

Step 1

  1. Apply to The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Radiation Sciences Interest. Transfer students – apply by November – wait to pay the $325 acceptance fee until a program admission decision is made.  Send all college transcripts to UI Admissions.
  2. Prepare for program application:
    1. Complete prerequisite coursework
    2. Job shadow
    3. Gain patient care experience
  3. Review the Technical Standards, Self Disclosure of Criminal Background, and Health Screening and Immunization Requirements documents. Certification is often required to practice in these careers.  Students may be denied application for certification if they have committed ethics or criminal violations.  Students are encouraged to verify their eligibility with the corresponding credentialing agency:
    1. Radiologic Technology and Radiation Therapy - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
    2. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
    3. Nuclear Medicine Technology – Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and ARRT

Step 2

Apply to the professional program (track)

  • Program applications will open in early November and are due January 15 at 11:59 PM.
  • Admission decisions will be finalized by the first week of March, and applicants will be notified via their University of Iowa email address.
  • Interviews are no longer part of the selection process.
  • Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine Technology only — Provide the name and email address of three professional references who can speak to your character and commitment to a career in healthcare. These should be supervisors, managers, or healthcare professionals you have worked with in a professional or academic setting. References should not be family members, friends, or personal acquaintances. Please contact your references in advance, as they are automatically emailed a request to complete their recommendation once you submit your application.
    • *All reference responses must be received by the January 15 deadline. Programs maintain the right to contact references to verify the authenticity of the recommendation and to request additional information if needed.

Off-Campus Programs - applications accepted throughout the year

RT to BS Program

For Radiologic Technologists and Nuclear Medicine Technologists who are ARRT(R), ARRT(N), or CNMT certified and plan to complete the degree online.  Students can start in the summer, fall, or spring semester.

  1. Complete the prerequisite courses
  2. Apply to the Carver College of Medicine, Radiation Sciences RT to BS major. Send all college transcripts to UI Admissions.
  3. Contact the Radiation Sciences Student Affairs Office (radiation-sciences@uiowa.edu) or 319-353-8388.

Students must complete the final consecutive 30 sh through the University of Iowa: online CT, MRI, CVI, or BI courses.

Nondegree Seeking Students

For imaging professionals interested in completing coursework for continuing education for non-degree purposes.

  • Meet the required course requirements and prerequisites.
  • Follow the application and registration instructions on the Distance and Online Education Nondegree Student site.

Continuing Education Credits

  • Imaging professionals should consult the ARRT with CE questions prior to taking a course.  Academic courses relevant to the profession taken through a regionally accredited university or college can count for 16 CE credits for each academic semester credit.  (ARRT) https://www.arrt.org/pdfs/governing-documents/continuing-education-requirements.pdf
  • The course must be completed during the biennium with a grade of "C" or better.  If audited by the ARRT, you will submit a copy of your transcript.
  • As of 6/12/25, all RSBI, RSCI, RSCT, and RSMR online courses have been approved for ARRT CE credits.

Auditing University of Iowa Courses

  • All faculty and staff are eligible to audit (i.e., register for zero semester hours) one University of Iowa course per semester, with permission, without being assessed tuition and mandatory fees for that course.
  • Satisfactory performance (minimum 'C' grade and completion of course requirements) is assigned an "AUS" (audit successful) grade on the transcript - courses will not receive credit, meet any college requirement, or be eligible for CE credits with the ARRT.    Unsatisfactory performance is assigned an "AUU" (audit unsuccessful).

The Faculty and Staff Application to Audit One Course with Tuition and Fees Waived  must be completed prior to the start of the semester/session.
