Job Shadowing Notes
- Highly recommended as a method for students to learn about Radiation Sciences and help determine the program(s) of interest.
- Applicants will enter the details of their job shadowing experiences on the program application.
- During the application process, a score is awarded according to the applicant’s career understanding.
- Six hours is recommended for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiologic Technology, and Nuclear Medicine Technology programs.
- Six to ten hours is recommended for the Radiation Therapy program.
Patient Care Experience Notes
- Hands-on patient care experience is highly recommended as a method for students to learn about a healthcare environment, become comfortable in a caregiving role, and gain patient communication skills.
- Applicants will enter the details of their patient care experience on the program application.
- During the application process, a score is awarded according to the type and length of experience:
- no patient care experience
- little patient care (reception desk, etc.)
- little training but direct patient care (volunteer in the hospital or nursing home helping take care of patients – transport, etc.)
- training and direct patient care (CNA program) – this is the best option
- Nearly 100% of accepted candidates have direct patient care experience.
- The average number of patient care experience hours varies greatly among accepted candidates.
- Total hours range from 32-1500 across all programs (400 average). Many had completed a CNA program.
