Mission Statement

The mission of the Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT) Program at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine is to provide comprehensive education to prepare competent, entry-level nuclear medicine technologists. The program equips students with the knowledge, clinical skills, professionalism, communication, and critical thinking abilities necessary to deliver safe, accurate, and compassionate patient-centered care across a variety of healthcare settings and patient populations.

This mission is in concert with the Carver College of Medicine’s commitment to inspire and educate world-class healthcare providers and scientists for the people of Iowa and our global community.

Goals & Learning Outcomes

Goal 1: Graduate clinically competent nuclear medicine technologists.

  • Students will demonstrate proficiency in routine and specialized nuclear medicine imaging procedures safely, accurately, and in accordance with clinical protocols and standards for practice.
  • Students will accurately prepare, calculate, verify, administer, and document radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications in compliance with regulatory and institutional standards.
  • Students will apply radiation safety principles to protect patients, staff, the public, and themselves in accordance with ALARA principles.

Goal 2: Students will demonstrate effective communication skills.

  • Students will demonstrate clear, accurate, and professional written, verbal, and non-verbal communication within the interprofessional healthcare team.

  • Students will provide procedure-specific instructions and patient education that support safe, effective, and patient-centered care.

Goal 3: Students will apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in clinical practice.

  • Students will assess patient conditions and procedural variables to adapt imaging procedures and ensure safe, patient-centered care in routine and non-routine situations.
  • Students will evaluate image quality and procedural data and apply appropriate technical and procedural adjustments to achieve diagnostic-quality results.

Goal 4: Students will demonstrate professionalism and ethical practice.

  • Students will demonstrate ethical behavior and professional conduct consistent with standards of nuclear medicine practice and healthcare regulations.

  • Students will demonstrate accountability, integrity, and respect in patient care and professional interactions within the healthcare environment.
